New York Shakespeare Exchange
2013 Season Announcement

“[NYSX] has made its entrance in grand style.
This young company is not just promising: It’s delivering”

TIME OUT NEW YORK

New York, New York, January 8, 2013— New York Shakespeare Exchange, the company that has earned critical acclaim for both The Life and Death of King John and the New York premiere of Kevin Brewer’s Island; Or, To Be or Not to Be, announces its upcoming 2013 season. Highlights include: Launching in April, The Sonnet Project, a massive multi-artist internet-based interpretation of Shakespeare’s sonnets, which will put these astounding poems quite literally into the pockets of people across the globe. In June, an ensemble-devised exploration of Shakespeare’s Pericles, Prince of Tyre. In September, a new staging of Shakespeare’s classic tale of jealousy and suspicion, Othello.  The season also includes the return of the ever popular and in-demand ShakesBEER, NYC’s Original Shakespearean Pub Crawl in February and July.

In regards to NYSX’s upcoming fourth season, Artistic Director Ross Williams comments, “This year is all about expanding our reach and exploring what a theatrical “exchange” really has the power to accomplish.  Building outward from the Sonnet Project, which will bring together over 300 artists, our fourth season will engage actors, directors, and designers in a truly profound way.  Othello, Pericles and both ShakesBEER Pub Crawls will utilize new creative voices that will open our audiences’ eyes to new and thrilling visions of Shakespearean theatre.”

Run Dates:  April 23, 2013 - April 23, 2014
Location:  Your Computer or Smartphone
Ticket Price: Free
Beginning on April 23, 2013, NYSX will release a series of web-based video sonnets that will explore the beauty of all 154 of Shakespeare’s famous poems.  Over the course of a full year, we will release three sonnet videos per week, and culminate the project on April 23, 2014, Shakespeare’s 450th birthday. Serving as a kind of love letter between New York and Shakespeare, each video will feature a different actor and location within the five boroughs of our city.  All videos will be accessible both online and via a specially designed Sonnet Project mobile app that will provide additional info, including supplemental content about the actors, film locations, and Shakespeare’s language, as well as mobile mapping of other nearby video locations.  As our first wholly web-based program, The Sonnet Project presents an opportunity for an audience reach that is unprecedented for NYSX. Our goal is to bring our brand of Shakespeare to 1,000,000 viewers by the project’s end.

Othello

What if our greatest danger lies in those we trust to love and protect us?  How can a man or woman maintain their innocence when their looks or conduct label them as guilty?  When images and words can be twisted and manipulated, can we really believe our own eyes or ears?  With Othello, NYSX invites the audience to examine their own ideas about appearances, relationships, and how we decide who is truly worthy of our trust.

New York Shakespeare Exchange (NYSX) offers innovative theatrical programming that explores what happens when contemporary culture is infused with Shakespearean poetry and themes in unexpected ways. Providing fresh points of entry to the work so that modern audiences will be exposed to the intrinsic power of Shakespeare, NYSX’s goal is to encourage an enthusiastic appreciation of classical theater and to expand the reach of the art form within new and existing audiences. New York Shakespeare Exchange premiered in spring 2010 as part of the HEREstay residency program at HEREArts with The One Man (Two Man (not quite)) Hamlet by Kevin Brewer. NYSX’s second season concluded with the successful production of The Life and Death of King John, universally praised by both critics and audiences for its innovation, creativity, and high quality. In 2012, NYSX presented the NYC premiere of Kevin Brewer’s Island; Or, To Be or Not to Be. Critics and audiences raved about the comedy’s witty language, humorous characters, and accurate reflection of Shakespeare’s works.
